A little over 5 years ago when Instagram became one of the leading social media in the Philippines, side by side with its parent social site Facebook, and became a measurement of influence along with Twitter, we still have celebrities topping the list of the most followed people locally.
However, who really are the most followed? Who are the most influential?
Selena Gomez is the current queen of Instagram worldwide with 136 million followers. While the current king is Portuguese professional footballer Cristiano Ronaldo with 125 million followers. You might easily guess that a Kardashian holds the record of the most followers on the social platform. Kim Kardashian checks in as fifth in the world with 110 million followers, after Ariana Grande (118 million followers) and Beyonce (114 million followers).
Locally, we still see the trend of the ladies outshining the men, not just on Instagram but online in general. It is an all-ladies Top 10 in the Philippines with Vice Ganda joining the ranks. Anne Curtis is still our social media darling while Pia Wurtzbach is the fast-rising in the Top 10.
After Vice, James Reid is the most followed male local personality on Instagram. He is followed by Senator Manny Pacquiao who is enjoying a huge international following. Only one more male joins James in the Top 30. 'It's Showtime' host Vhong Navarro hangs on the upper tier, even ahead of bankable young leads like Daniel Padilla, Enrique Gil and Alden Richards.

Instagram followers may not absolutely mean popularity or automatic conversion of their movies, TV shows and endorsements into box office, ratings and market success. However, it surely is an indication of these personalities' relevance and their capability to start a discussion online.
