In what’s becoming to be a long list of internet slangs comes ‘delulu’, shortcut for ‘delusional’ which is mostly an adjective used to describe personalities that have misguided idea of situations far from reality. Most recently and most commonly, this term described influencers and celebrities whose perception of fame is bigger than what they actually have.
In ‘Delia D.’, Newport World Resorts’s latest original musical offering, which is based on the songs of hitmaker Jonathan Manalo, puts out a reminder of humbling one’s self — in spite of fame and talent.
In an industry subjected to different opinions and preferences, who is really talented and who is not? Who deserves to be called the champion? This 3-hour spectacle directs its viewers to a colorful reflection of what makes up fame, backgrounded with all the vibrance and dazzle of comedy and production numbers.
Phi Palmos, in probably the biggest stage so far in her young career, takes on the title role of Delia, an aspiring singer who encounters the drama behind her televised singing contest. Phi has challenges in several vocal segments but she makes up for her show of theatrics in both the hilarious and sentimental moments with ooze and flair.
Shaira Opsimar, who plays Delia’s best friend turned nemesis Kiki, meanwhile, is a vocal star. Relatively new on live stage, Shaira has starred in ‘Rak of Aegis’ and ‘Walang Aray’, and agains shows her singing prowess here.
Omar Uddin, on the other hand, provides the cuteness in this musical as he portrays Raymond. Delia’s love interest also fills the musical requirements in this show, headlined with his calm but commanding singing tone.
Other notable cast in Delia D. are John Lapus as Mama Eme, Floyd Tena as Sir T., Tex Ordonez- de Leon as Mamon, Joann Yap Co as Anet, Josh Cabiladas as Jose, Mimi Marquez as GVB, and Miah Canton as Tonee.
Dulaang UP alumnus Dexter Santos directs. A talented choreographer himself, he works closely with Stephen Vinas for a buffet of dance numbers which — true to the promise of its home Newport World Resorts — shall thrill viewers.
