There's a reason why Star Cinema waited this long to continue Darna even if its super glossy teaser was screened in movie houses as early as last year's Metro Manila Film Festival. Because they waited for their star to recuperate. All this time, and even after several names of young actresses have been rumored to replace her, it will still be Angel Locsin.
Leading entertainment website Fashion Pulis confirmed this, not in a blind item, but through a news article. Although the blog site did not name any sources, it reported that Locsin "has been confirmed to be reprising the role that initially catapulted her to fame."
In a separate report by Jimi Escala for Balita, Jessy Mendiola, ABS-CBN's next bet for the role after Locsin, has confirmed that she is no longer doing the iconic superhero role. "Mismong si Jessy pa ang nagsasabi na gusto man nitong gumanap sa role na dating ginampanan ni Vilma Santos, tanggap na raw nitong hindi mapupunta sa kanya ang project. May nagparating na raw kasi kay Jessy na huwag nang umasa dahil sa umpisa pa lang at may napipisil na ang Star Cinema para maging Darna. Sino pa nga ba kundi si Angel Locsin."
Doubts were raised on Angel's capacity to reprise the role because of her health. However, the actress is now back to an active lifestyle by engaging in sports-related activities like diving and mountain climbing as seen in her Instagram account.

In June 2016, ABS-CBN News published an article on Angel's reply when asked again if she is still Darna. The actress, who has already portrayed Darna in a GMA primetime series, said: "Basta naniniwala ka."
Also last June 30, ABS-CBN News published another article sharing Locsin's willingness to do the role after surviving her health issues. The actress is quoted in saying "Kung ibibigay sa akin eh para sa akin."
So, out with the talks on Jessy Mendiola, Liza Soberano, Nadine Lustre, Maja Salvador and even Pia Wurtzbach doing the role. As far as the 2017's production of Star Cinema is concerned, which will be under the direction of the renowned Erik Matti, Angel Locsin is going to be Darna.
