Before Alyas Robin Hood, 4 Shows With Alleged Copied Concepts

Image from pep.ph

While there is an online fiasco whether Dingdong Dantes's new TV show "Alyas Robin Hood" is a local copycat of the American series "Arrow", or just another creative spin-off of the Robin Hood fiction where Stephen Amell's show is also based on, we all can agree that we've been in this route of alleged ripped-off concepts before.

But what separates inspiration from imitation?

And what's the difference between adaptation or a localized remake (e.g. Bea Alonzo's "I Love Betty La Fea" from Colombia "Yo soy Betty, la fea", Kim Chiu's "My Girl" based from a Korean series of the same title, and Richard Gutierrez and Heart Evangelista's remake of "Full House") from direct carbon copies? Let's discuss and take a look back.

Imortal and Twilight

On October 8, 2010, PEP.ph's Earl Villanueva wrote that John Lloyd Cruz and Angel Locsin's then new primetime show is undeniably inspired by the global hit Twilight, a series of five fantasy films adapted from the best-selling novel by Stephenie Meyer.

But it was only a chain reaction. ABS-CBN's creative team branded the series as a sequel to Locsin and Piolo Pascual's primetime show "Lobo". Villanueva wrote, "There's the whole vampire versus werewolves deal, which essentially is "Twilight" in a nutshell."

"Imortal" then went on to successfully air 148 episodes from October 4, 2010 to April 29, 2011. If it's not enough to wow you, Angel and John Lloyd were both nominated for Best Drama Actress and Actor at the 25th Star Awards for TV. The show was nominated for Best Primetime TV Series too but lost to Coco Martin and Maja Salvador's "Minsan Lang Kita IIbigin".

Kokey and ET

They got you in a single lift of a finger. Would this still be an inspiration? Or nothing but imitation?

The show was aired on ABS-CBN from August 6 to November 9, 2007. It was directed by the late Wenn Deramas and Ruel Bayani and starred Ayan Galito as the alien Sean Chester Gan. Other lead cast included Julia Barretto, Ruffa Gutierrez, the late Redford White, Eugene Domingo, Zanjoe Marudo, and Megan Young.

We found out that Kokey, before becoming a primetime series, was actually a movie by Star Cinema which was released in 1997. Carlo Aquino portrayed Bong, the young boy who became the close friend of Kokey. The blockbuster ET (Extra Terrestrial), a movie by renowned Hollywood director Steven Spielberg, however, was released 15 years earlier or in 1982.

1Dol and Glee

In September 2009, American musical show Glee was riding on an extreme popularity that it easily booked a second season which aired from September 21, 2010 to May 24, 2011. The show was also popular to Filipino viewers and enjoyed high following on cable TV.

That the same month, ABS-CBN gave birth to another musical show which premiered on September 6, 2010. It was with Sarah Geronimo, Sam Milby and Coco Martin for 1DOL.

While observers insisted that the fusion of the songs into the story line is very similar to Glee's style, Sam Milby said that the story is different. He, however, admitted in an article which was originally posted on abs-cbn.com, that the concept is similar. "Of course, it's going to be compared to Glee. It's the same concept but they shouldn't think of it as the Filipino version of Glee kasi hindi ganun. Kasi iba ang story..."

Seven weeks later, the show pulled off air.

E-Boy and Bicentennial Man

The look of the robots wasn't the only element that is similar. The late Robin Williams portrayed Andrew Martin, an NDR android servant of the Martin family that later on realized that he is capable of human emotions and can reciprocate it. Bugoy Carino, on the other hand, is E-boy, who has also learned to explore the world of humans, of building relationships and of loving unconditionally.

The movie Bicentennial Man was released December of 1999 while E-Boy aired on ABS-CBN from January 30 to April 13, 2012.
