There’s a common thing between Gen Zs and millennials: that most celebrities of their generations are meant to hide their real relationships with their on-screen partners. This is probably why, even after almost three decades later, people are still interested if Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin were officially together in real life.
At the fan conference of their reunion movie ‘Ex Ex Lovers’ (yup, no reunion romantic-comedy title could be more fitting), Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin are still patient on answering questions about their past. Because, the chemistry and the “kilig” is still very much being felt in the present.
“May stage kami na naging MU (mutual understanding). But di na kami nag cross pa ‘ dun sa pagiging official na naging kami,” Marvin said. His partner for almost six years, made the most popular via the teen-oriented show “Gimik”, Jolina Magdangal has also the same story. “Ang hirap lang talaga that time na maging magka relasyon sa showbiz. We were just happy na parang special kami sa isa’t-isa that time,” the pop icon said.
In “Ex Ex Lovers”, Jolina Magdangal plays Joy who has to find her ex-husband Ced (Marvin Agustin) in Malta so she can make the request of her daughter come true: to be walked down the aisle by her father in her wedding. Loisa Andalio plays as Jolina’s daughter in the movie while musician Juan Karlos Labajo plays her husband to be. The reunion in the charming European country creates comedic and heartfelt moments which is made more interesting because of the unresolved issues in the past.
This Antonette Jadaone-produced movie, the director behind ‘That Thing Called Tadhana’ and ‘Love You To The Stars and Back’ among other titles, is being entrusted under the direction of JP Habac. Habac’s most memorable film is the Paulo Avelino and Maja Salvador starrer ‘I’m Drunk I love You’.
On being given a Valentine’s movie after three decades of not being together in a film, Jolina finds it easy to be working with Marvin. Jolina is married for 14 years to former Rivermaya drummer Marc Escueta, who as Jolina revealed, is a fan of their team-up. “Siya pag nag sasabi na kailangan namin mag picture ni Marvin if magkita kami. Genun siya, ang supportive niya,” she reveals.
For Marvin, working with Jolina is easy because they already know each others’ acting styles. “Comfortable nako talaga sa kanya. Ang gaan lang. Kaya I did not think twice when this movie was offered to us.”
‘Ex Ex Lovers’ is a collaboration by Project 8 Projects, Cornerstone Studios, CMB Film Services and Sineng Labuyo Entertainment. It is being distributed by Warner Bros Pictures. It will be shown in cinemas nationwide starting February 12, or during Valentine’s week.
