Is society being too sensitive? Is this making a comedian's job more difficult?
Such is the narrow path that entertainers in the comedy industry have to navigate. For Inah Evans, she has exempted herself from the debate for not engaging in jokes that target culture, gender, religion, and something that she quips with so much care: politics.
Inah Evans, the comedian who reached viral status for sounding like Kuya Dick (Roderick Paulate), is creating her own space in the country's not-so long list of comedians. And she is taking up her space with so much regard for the sensitivities of social media and half of her audience, the Gen Zs.
"Anything that magiging offensive sa totoong buhay ng isang tao, parang 'wag na lang. Isip na lang ako ng ibang way or sarili ko na lang ang gagawin kong katatawanan", she said at the media conference of her upcoming improv show "The Baklang Kanal Show" which is scheduled on July 10 at the Music Museum.
Aside from Roderick Paulate, who is known for creating comedy out of his naturally funny huge reactions in movies, Inah would consider her previous manager Vice Ganda for comedic inspiration. "Ang bilis bilis niya mag isip. Lalo na pag magkasama kami, 'yung utak niya, nabi-bilib talaga ako," she said.
Although labeling her comedy as still "dark", Inah adjusts her style depending on the platform. The more intimate her venue is, like in fun drinking session with friends, the darker she can go.
She will take this rawness in "The Baklang Kanal Show". "Mas nae-enjoy ko 'yung mga comedy na impromptu kaysa dun sa mga pinag iisipan talaga," referring to skits that are often scripted and choreographed.
Even in choosing a path for herself, it is also something that comes with a surprise. Inah has actually envisioned herself to becoming a serious actor, not a comedian. But when asked if there is an immediate wish she would want for her career, it is to make more comedy show -- something that will be manifested depending on the public's response for her first ever comedy show.
"The Baklang Kanal Show" will be held at the Music Museum on July 10. Follow Inah Evans' social media accounts for more details on tickets.
