Last Minute Gown Replacement for Pia Wurtzbach at the Miss Universe Prelims

Netizens were all praises for Pia Wurtzbach's beautiful performance especially at the evening gown round at earlier's Miss Universe 2015 preliminaries. But pageant fans were not as excited about the red gown that Pia wore.

On Twitter, some netizens described the evening gown as "verging on Principal sponsor-ish" and too modest for the world's most prestigious pageant. For Glitz.PH however, it was the best gown a Filipina had ever worn at the pageant since 2007. A good development since it was reported that the Philippine bet has nothing to wear with just one day left before the preliminaries.

The red gown's designer, Oliver Tolentino, tweeted that Wurtzbach's dress is one of the nine gowns he sent the last minute to Las Vegas for choices. LA-based Filipino journalist Ruben Nepales posted that an off-the-rack gown purchased by the organizers did not fit the Philippine bet and she had no real alternative.

"Tolentino was on vacation after the successful grand opening of his new Beverly Hills boutique last weekend (when he) received a panicked phone call from Las Vegas just a day before the preliminaries," the post said. "I would do whatever I could do to help the Philippines. I had 9 gowns from the new Beverly Hills boutique sent that afternoon to Las Vegas in order for Pia to have as many choices as possible and to make sure something fit," Nepales quoted Tolentino.

In the end, Wurtzbach chose the red-orange silk crepe de chine mermaid gown with a bodice fully embellished with red Swarovski crystals and a front slit at the center. "They said she loved it and felt good in it and was finally able to relax. I have no idea why this was all so last minute," the fashion designer shared.

Oliver Tolentino is the first Filipino in 53 years to have dressed an Oscar winner. He also designed clothes for Hollywood actors attending the Emmys and the Grammys awards show. More than 75 Hollywood celebrities have worn his creations including Jessica Alba, Ceelo Green, Sophia Bush and Carrie Underwood.

Miss Philippines, as expected, received the loudest applause along with other Asian delegates from Thailand and Vietnam at The AXIS in Planet Hollywood where the preliminaries was held. She also became an instant favorite among pageant observers, ranking her among the pre-pageant favorites along with Australia, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Spain, USA, Venezuela and Vietnam.

The new Miss Universe will be crowned on Sunday, December 20th at 7PM ET (December 21st, 9AM in Manila). Should Pia win, she's going to be the third Filipina and the first in 42 years to win Miss Universe.
